Why is this person an icon? I think words abound right here, his songs give you the reasons . He IS the jazz musician. Without him, music today would have been different. In his times, he contribute to the Harlem Renaissance and he also made way for jazz in the 20`s. You could say he was responsible for GATSBY'S partys. He made everyone shake their booties off and party till there was no tomorrow.
